20 Weird Things You Can Only Get At a Chinese Walmart
Near. Far. Wherever you are. You know there’s a Walmart nearby. Whatever you need, they’ve got it, for less than competitors. Walmart is so big and pervasive they’ve even made their way into the Asian market, something few similar companies can boast. The best part of having Walmarts in China? Getting to see what sort of oddities live on the shelves! Here are 20 of the weirdest and most bizarre items you can pick up if you’re browsing the aisles at a Chinese Walmart:
1. Live Fish – But Not the Kind You Think
Your local Walmart might offer goldfish or angel fish for sale, or at least an aquarium or two, and they’ll probably have fishing rods if you want to catch your own. But does it have its own fish market? Whether you’ve got a hankering for eel or tuna, you can pick the liveliest in the tank for your dinner.
2. Baby Watermelon
You’ve seen baby corn before, but what about baby watermelons? Summer’s juiciest melon gets miniaturized specially for the shelves of Chinese Walmart. We wish they sold these everywhere!
3. Two Ways to Refuel
Hungry AND running out of juice in your Walkman? Have no fear, the Snickers-Battery Combo Pack is here! Er, well, it’s “here” if you’re at a Chinese Walmart. Otherwise you’re out of luck, you’ll have to walk to two different aisles to get your fixes. Drat!
4. Eggs…of All Sorts
Whether you like chicken eggs for breakfast or prefer frog eggs, fish eggs, goose eggs, or snake eggs, you can find what you need at a Chinese Walmart. If it’s an animal that lays eggs, there’s a good chance those eggs are for sale.
5. Reptile Jerky
You can buy a whole crocodile if you like, but if you’re after a particular body part, or a different type of reptile meat, you can find just what you want in a Chinese Walmart. Dried reptile parts are commonly eaten as snacks or on sandwiches, or made into soups or salads. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it!
6. Meat Water
You read that right. Vegetarians, move along. In China, you can get water flavored like all your favorite processed animal products: chicken wings, cheese burgers, you name it! And speaking of weird waters…
7. Diet Water
Make sure your calorie count for the day stays in your safety zone by ensuring you only drink diet water. It’s the only water with zero carbs, calories, or fat. Wait a minute…that doesn’t sound quite right…
8. Pig Ears…And the Rest of the Face, too
Why settle for just the nose or just the ear when you can have the whole head? Next time someone calls you pig-faced, remind them it’s a delicacy in China.
9. Beef Granules
Kinda looks like candy, right? Well, it’s often eaten like candy: pop a handful right into your mouth!
10. Unwrapped, Un-refrigerated Sausage
Like sausage? Would you like it if it came out of a bin, unwrapped and un-refrigerated? It’s commonplace in China to see large bins of loose sausages, and people just reaching in to grab the one that looks best to them! Hey, when in a Chinese Walmart…
11. “Fat Guy” Underwear
If you’re one of the heftier set, you’ll be delighted to know that the Walmarts in China have anticipated your need for size-appropriate underwear. These so-called “Fat Guy Underwear” are just for heavier men, and feature a picture of one particularly recognizable fat man on the front.
12. Powdered Milk…From a Horse
We’re not sure if this builds strong bones, like cow’s milk does, but it must have some benefits if they sell it by the gallon. What a relief that this brand doesn’t try to cut costs by using pony milk!
13. Rice on Rice on Rice…on Rice
It’s no secret that rice is a staple of Asian cuisine. It’s sold loose in bins like these at Chinese Walmarts so people can save money buying in bulk. Make sure you pick up a rice cooker while you’re shopping!
14. Meat Floss Donuts
Meat floss looks like insulation, tastes a little gamey, and doesn’t show up on the shelves in American Walmarts. But in China they love the stuff so much that they turn it into donuts!
15. Dried Squid
This isn’t quite as weird as some of the other items we’ve seen so far, but it’s definitely not the norm in American or European Walmarts.
16. Fox Meat
Love cute little foxes with their big fluffy tails and little wiggly noses? How about on a burger? Fox meat is sold by the pound at Chinese Walmarts.
17. Shark Heads
If you didn’t think the pig heads were weird enough, how about shark heads? We’ve heard of shark fin soup but shark nose stew sounds a bit more out there.
18. Chicken Feet
Chicken feet are actually common in many cultures. They’re popular tools in Santeria, Vodou, and Hoodoo – and they’re popular cooking ingredients in Asia! A pack of chicken feet at a Chinese Walmart is quite generous, so you’ll have plenty to share with your friends back home.
19. Deception of Sheep Offal
That’s what it’s called. We don’t know what it means. We don’t know if it’s real sheep offal. We just don’t know, and we’re afraid to find out!
20. Frozen Crocodile
When you have the whole neighborhood coming to your BBQ, a few dried reptile pieces just won’t do it. Thank goodness Walmart offers whole frozen crocodile to keep everyone satisfied (that is, as long as you’re in China!) [tps_title][/tps_title]
