Every culture has its superstitions. Some are famous, like crossing paths with a black cat, spilling salt, breaking a mirror, or walking under a ladder. We’re so used to these superstitions, though, that while we might think them silly we don’t think they are very strange. But someone from another country would probably find it pretty odd!
And the same goes for other culture’s superstitions. They seem really out there, but they’re normal for the people who follow them! Here are 12 strange superstitions from around the world; would you follow any of them?
1.) Thailand: a man should wear a penis necklace to bring good luck.
2.) Russia: having a lot of bird poop on roof means you’ll be coming into a lot of money in the future.
3.) Turkey: people don’t chew gum at night because it is too similar to dead flesh.
4. ) India: during a solar eclipse, the sun’s rays are toxic so you should stay inside until it passes.
5.) Japan: when passing a cemetery, you should tuck your thumbs into your pockets to keep death at bay.
6.) England: it was once believed that lettuce could cause sterility, so men avoided it like the plague.
7.) England: carrying an acorn with you could keep you young.
8.) Russia: carrying an empty bucket is a bad omen.
9.) Goats have traditionally been believed to absorb evil, so walking past a goat was good luck.
10.) Nigeria: if you kiss a baby on the lips, he will drool until he’s an adult.
11.) Serbia: klutzes rejoice, spilling water before a job interview means good luck!
